Opinion: Kim Kardashian and the Nude Selfie

I’m not a Kardashian fan. I find it kind of sickening that these reality stars get paid 10x more than someone who contributes a lot to society, such as a teacher or firefighter. They get paid to do nothing but complain about prima-donna problems all day, but that’s probably more of a reflection on what the American public values than the Kardashians themselves.

I could talk about what is wrong with this family all day long, but I do not want to write a hate post on the Kardashians. However, I do want to talk about something that’s been circulating the news. Lately, Kim Kardashian has been posting nude selfies of herself on Instagram, proclaiming it to be female empowerment.

This isn’t really anything new. As you might recall last year, she was on the cover of a magazine, baring all in its photoshopped glory. While that photo in particular was a distasteful nude, my general problem isn’t with the nudity. It’s the way she justifying it as an act of empowerment because she is owning her sexuality. Kim recently openly penned a letter that had many laughable contradictions, one of them being, “I am empowered by my body. I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me”. I’m sorry but if she was comfortable in her own skin and wasn’t afraid to show her flaws, the second black and white photo wouldn’t have been as heavily airbrushed and not have looked ‘perfect’. In this photo, her hair is perfect, makeup perfect, and has what the media portrays as ‘the perfect body’. Look, maybe Kim Kardashian has super genes, I don’t know, but she just had a second baby and I’m sure that her tight abs were either photoshopped or that she had plastic surgery. The vast majority of women do not look like this shortly after having children. If she was really not afraid to show her flaws, she would not look like she was ready to go to the Oscars, but naked (and wouldn’t of that have that been a hoot!).

In my opinion, she is using female empowerment as a mask for using Instagram as an attention-seeking, self-serving platform. She is doing this for publicity/her own narcissistic needs; not to empower herself, her daughter, or other women. I personally do not have a problem with tasteful nude photography. When photography is used to show humans in their most raw and natural form, it can be extremely powerful and beautiful. However, taking an ugly, sexualized  bathroom selfie and then posting another photo where you’re airbrushed for personal gain is not.

My question for Kim is: why not use International Women’s Day to spread awareness about female pay inequality,  the gender gap in certain professions, girls not being given the right to an education, the worldwide violence against women, human trafficking, or the countless other injustices women have to face around the world daily?! Why use International Women’s Day instead to post naked pictures of yourself, using no message other than ‘be proud of your body as long you Photoshop, have a hair blowout, and do your makeup first.”, and then slapping the hashtag “Happy International Women’s Day” all over it. I’m sorry Kim, but you’re instead making it “Happy International Kim Kardashian Day”. Are women who are struggling with body image going to be in the news more because of this? No, you will be. And if they are, they’ll be talking about  you as a contributor.

What do you think about this topic? Do you agree with me or have a different opinion? I’m all ears!

February Favorites

I’m a little bit late for this but February was a month filled with favorites!!! New makeup, , tv show, books, the list just keeps getting longer and longer. How about we start with some makeup!!!

Makeup:The Pacifica Enlighten Eye Brightening Palette : I love makeup, but don’t wear it a lot because my skin feels best bare-faced. However, I have been wearing more than I usually would lately and that is partly thanks to this palette from Pacifica. If you want a more in depth review, check out this post  I wrote a few weeks ago. To give you summary though, this eye-shadow palette is affordable, blends perfectly, sports beautiful colors, isn’t filled with nasty ingredients,  and overall are just some of the best pressed eye-shadows I’ve ever used. I’d highly recommend this palette. Here are some eye looks I’ve made with colors from this palette for the past month:

Fashion: Colored Fleece Lined Leggings- These were a birthday gift for me and each of them were on sale for only $12. I got them in dark grey (my favorite shade of grey), navy, and burgundy. I’ve basically been living in these leggings for the past month. They are beyond comfortable and keep me uber warm, something that is vital for me to have in winter clothing because I get cold like nobody’s business. I am now wearing skirts more often as well because I have warm leggings that can go underneath. I used to say that I was a jean person, but now I think that I’m a legging person thanks to this birthday gift. Fleece lined leggings, in my opinion, are a winter staple that isn’t mentioned often enough. Therefore, my biggest piece of advice to you is GET SOME COLORED FLEECE LINED LEGGINGS ASAP! :P.

Here is a picture of me wearing them in navy and burgundy:ootd

Television Show: FULLER HOUSE!!!

fuller-house-1024

OMG I can’t talk about this series without screaming like a little girl!!! I was a huge, Huge, HUge, HUGE, HUGE fan of the original Full House when I was a kid. To emphasis how big this obsession was, I used to stop playing outside everyday at 4:00p just to go and watch Full House. I’ve also seen every single episode ever, multiple times. After I finished it, I always wondered, what are the Tanners up to now? And voila the year 2016 came and dreams came true. The revival was everything a dedicated fan could have wished for and more. The series is extremely nostalgic, but definitely does not utilize it as it’s sole fuel, like the critics claim. It has an incredible original platform to go off of to channel a new series while still keeping the essence of the old show. Plus DJ’s boys are adorable! I’d recommend this show for anybody who doesn’t take things too seriously/can appreciate non-sophisticated humor (that was the critics problem aha), is looking for something lighthearted, and loves family shows. Now for the best news!! They are going to make more episodes! Season 2 is coming back in 2017! Life is tough, but beautiful folks, and if Fuller House isn’t proof of it than I don’t know what is.

Book: Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King

Loved this book!!!! This books is everything you could want in a book;  tragedy, humor,  uplifting, heartwarming, and unique are the words I think of when this book comes to mind. To give you a description, this book is about an 18 year old girl, Vera, who is haunted by her dead best friend Charlie, telling her to clear his name. Vera is an extremely likable but yet dynamic character. She isn’t stuck up, disrespectful  ‘cuz she’s just a teenager and that’s how all teenagers act’, hates her parents for no reason, or is only obsessed with boys like other young adult female characters. The words she speaks and the life messages she gives I think will resonate with every reader. It’s a bit slow getting going but once it takes off, it takes off!  This is one of the most honest accounts of growing up I’ve ever read and I’d highly recommend it to anybody, whether you are a teenager or 99 years old. A.S. King has a very distinctive style of writing and I hope to read some of her other books in the future.

How To Make Food You Don’t Like Yummy

I love chia pudding. It is my belief that the Dairy-Free and Soy-Free Gods and Goddesses came together and concocted this amazing pudding for those who have allergies. It’s genius if you think about it. Seeds chilled overnight and bam, you have something of a pudding like texture! Yup, chia pudding is my jam and I’m not ashamed. However, I do not like mango chia pudding. I enjoy mango just as much as the next person, but pureed mango flavor and chia seeds just don’t mix.

To make a long story short, everyone in my family was really sick and I decided to pick out some chia pudding to soothe everyone’s throat. However, all they had left was the mango flavor, so I picked some up for my mother, who likes the mango. However, once I brought it home, she said it was a big no-no food for digestive tract at the time, so there it sat in the fridge. Fast forward to a week later and the fridge is empty, the only breakfast food there being mango chia pudding. Instead of starving or relying on potato chips to give me energy to start my day, I decided to make it work and turn this food that I didn’t like into some sort of delicacy that would make the French jealous. Okay, maybe we shouldn’t go that far, but you get the point.

Drum roll please…….

I made a fruit and nut filled mango chia pudding instead. Here’s a magazine worthy picture!

Mango chia pudding.jpg

Nature’s Candy That I Used: Mango chunks (yes I’m aware that this an ironic ingredient, but it tasted great), cantaloupe, pecans, dried figs, and a handful of golden raisins. I also put about a teaspoon of coconut sugar in (a natural sugar-free substitute that doesn’t give you that crash. It taste a lot like brown sugar and your mind/body will thank you for using it later).

This turned out to be one of the best meals that I had in weeks and I started to not mind the mango flavor at all because it was melded in with other stuff. Sometimes, you just have to take what’s in your kitchen and make something out of nothing, get my drift? A little bit of creativity can go a long way!

How do you get creative in the kitchen? Is there an instance where you took a food you didn’t really like and made it into something delicious or at least palatable?
